The Sprout @ St. Matthias Group had a super day of entrepreneurship! They put together a fantastic Summer Snack Stand! They made the signs, packaged all the products, made lemonade, and marketed to the customers nearby. They decided to give 30% of their proceeds to a local animal shelter. It was an exciting day!
Today in Sprout, the Campers made their own smoothies. They were able to mix ingredients, taste test their own and each others, bottle the best recipe of their choosing. Then they made a label and named their smoothie and calculated the nutritional value of the smoothie. It was a really fun day with lots of yummy smoothies and a few that needed tweaking (LOL). Overall the kids were engaged in understanding how a delicious snack could be made with fruits and even VEGETABLES!
We kicked off our camp week with a classic recyclable project! We talked about landfills, biodegradable materials, harmful plastics and wasteful materials. We looked at houses made from recyclable materials and then got inspired! The Sprout kids were given ample recycled materials to sort through and they were asked to design something that is “useful!” – which could be just about anything. They came up with games, an organizer, a pencil holder, an oil mister, and rocket! Great ideas from all the kiddos.
Wow! What a week it’s been! The Sprout kids were really excited and so organized for their student request to have a lemonade stand. We discussed being an entrepreneur. Giving to a charity: which they all agreed they would be collecting for The Tree House Humane Society. And we talked about net profit.
The group made the lemonade and Rice Krispy treats at Sprout Camp. Some kids went home and baked cookies, made strawberry ice cubes, and home made things too. One kiddo put in her recyclable jewelry collection she made earlier this week. Another has been making dog and cat toys! (see the video below to see how much fun my doggy had with her cute toy!)
It was a great show of team effort and creativity!
Well the results were amazing! Thanks to the amazing camp teachers at Roycemore School who brought their camp groups to “The Sprout Stand”
We are giving almost $20 to The Tree House Humane Society and each camper took home $10! Some campers have their own charities that they said they would give a bit of their earnings to their own charities and some others said they will spend it! I encouraged them to put a little into savings as well 🙂
This is always a great day when we get creative and make things out of recyclable materials! We talked about the Design thinking process. First, we looked at what materials were available to us. Then we thought about something that could be made that is “useful.” This parameter is very open ended because what is useful to you can be different to what is useful to me! Then the kiddos designed, created, redesigned, recreated and completed lots of fun projects such as a sling-shot, a house, a mini-basketball court, a desk organizer, and a jewelry organizer! What fun! And then outside for a little hide-n-seek and fun at the play lot.
After learning about household products and their chemical reactions, the Sprout kids set off to make a non-newtonian fluid and then experimented with their own concoctions including slime, balloon “explosions”, an oozing fluffy potion nicknamed “elephant toothpaste” and much more.
What a great way to learn about Newton’s third law of motion, momentum, and pressure then through a explosive project on bottle rockets! By placing the right ratio of baking soda and vinegar inside a plastic bottle and then corking it and watching the chemical reaction take place was amazing fun!
